"Dist. #304 embraces UCCF's community garden plan"
from The Clearwater Progress, 5/22/8, page 9:

"Kamiah school trustees gave the go-ahead Monday that allows the Upper Clearwater Community Foundation (UCCF) to launch a community garden project on school ground bordering Lawyers Creek.

The UCCF's Dan Millward asked trustees Monday night for permission to lease the ground that is located south of the district's athletic compound and adjacent to the softball field.

The district will offer the UCCF a four-month lease at a cost of a dollar to help launch the community garden. Millward, also a city councilman, said the city could provide a water spigot for residents for watering purposes and the school district would be reimbursed by the UCCF for the cost of the water.

Also, he assured trustees that the UCCF will make sure the school ground is restored to its original state after the gardening season, minus the weeds and blackberry bushes.

In other business..."

Subject: Backyard Harvest Late Spring Volunteer Opportunities
To: Amy Grey

Well, we are getting seeds and plant starts in the ground, flowers bundled for the market, and trees registered for gleaning later this summer. We need your help, though, to continue moving forward in our efforts to collect and distribute 20,000 lbs of fresh locally grown produce to area food banks and meal programs. Below are some short and longer term volunteer opportunities. Just call or email me if you have extra time and want to help out.

Farmer's Market Booth–We need help tabling at the Farmer's Market for the following shifts in May and June:
May 24, 10-12 May 31, 8-10 and 10-12 June 7, 10-12 June 14, 10-12 June 21, 8-10 and 10-12 June 28, 8-10 and 10-12
We will supply the coffee, you just need to pass out magnets and register trees for gleaning.

Community Plots—Lettuce, cabbages, kale and potatoes have all been been planted in plots in both Moscow, Pullman, and Lewiston. We now need people to help weed and water once a week and help us plant warm season veggies at the beginning of June.

Produce Pick-ups—Have time to work a weekly veggie drop-off or pick-up into your schedule? We are particularly looking for folks living in the surrounding rural communities to help transport produce to their food banks and senior meal programs. We are also looking for people to host drop-off bins.

FREE SEEDS & STARTS–Interested in planting extra in your garden to donate back to the project? From now until July we have a variety of seeds and starts to help you get started. Just contact me for what's currently available.

Town Orchard—We have over 200 trees that have been registered for gleaning this year! While picking will not start until cherries and apricots are ripe at the end of June, please spread the word to your neighbors with fruit trees about the program (if they are interested in participating, just have them email me). Also if you know of a group that is looking for an outing starting in July (and continuing in Sept–Nov), contact me about our weekend gleaning events at local orchards.

Backyard Blooms–Love growing flowers as much as veggies? Most Friday evenings this summer we will be gathering to put together bunches of blooms to offer for donation at the Farmer's Market the next day. Any bunches that do not find homes will then be distributed to local senior centers. Please join us on Fridays from 6.30-8.00 at Backyard Harvest's 7th St. Garden (933 E. 7th St.). Bring your freshly cut flowers and/or your bunching talents. (Please call/email beforehand to confirm schedule)

Want to play a role in shaping how Backyard Harvest grows? We are forming three committees composed of Board members and volunteers, including:

Program Committee—Help shape and evaluate BYH's existing programs, as well as explore new opportunities
Fundraising/Grants Committee—Map out strategy, plan events, identify and write grants to allow BYH to continue to offer its many services
Every Town Committee—We already have Backyard Harvest chapters in Paso Robles and Santa Barbara, and requests to help groups in
Milwaukee, Portland and Ventura County CA . . . help us figure out how to inexpensively replicate the program across the country.

In addition to all of the above, we are also looking for people with web and accounting skills!
Just call or e-mail me if you want to sign up or need additional information on any of the above.
Thanks!!!!

Well the crocuses are out, the gardening catalogs are piling up on my desk and my boys are tracking mud all through the house—spring is finally here! And after a really busy winter, Backyard Harvest is ready to start its third season and add to the 18,000 lbs of fresh fruits and vegetables we have already distributed to local families and seniors in need.

We need your help, though, to get our 2008 season off to a terrific start. Below are some short and longer term volunteer opportunities. Just call or email me if you have some extra time and want to help out.

Backyard Blooms–Love growing flowers as much as veggies? We are starting a new program to help raise funds to support our collection and distribution efforts. Most Friday evenings this summer we will be gathering to put together bunches of blooms to offer for donation at the Farmer's Market the next day. Any bunches that do not find homes will then be distributed to local senior centers. Please join us on Friday, May 2 from 6.30-8.00 at Backyard Harvest's 7th St. Garden (933 E. 7th St.) for the first of these sessions. Bring your freshly cut flowers and/or your bunching talents.

Farmer's Market Booth–We need help tabling at the Farmer's Market each Saturday in May and June either on a 8–10 or 10–12 shift. We will be distributing seeds, starts, magnets and flower bunches, as well as registering trees for Town Orchard.

Community Plots—With all the snow (and hail and sleet!) we are off to a late start this season, which means we can use all the help we can get to prepare several gardens in both Moscow, Pullman and Viola. We are looking for both short and long term help to plant, weed, water, and harvest.

Produce Pick-ups—Have time to work a weekly veggie drop-off or pick-up into your schedule?
Just call or e-mail me if you want to sign up or need additional information on any of the above. I am really looking forward to working with you to make this season our best yet.

We didn't have a secretary at the September meeting, so I'm posting these informal notes.
First, good wishes to Linda Stamper, who was recovering from an accident.
We met at the Soroptomists' Park at 6:30 on 9/20. Present were Mark and Maura Willig, Ellen Friel, and Darcy James. Mark briefed us on the proposed park upgrade and space for our garden. The group gave him the go-ahead to represent us at Grangeville City Council with Terri Tackett.
Maura reminded us that this was the final meeting of the officers' 3-month commitment. Ellen Friel was elected Chair; Mark Willig will continue as Head of Garden planning; Maura Willig will move to Treasurer. Election of a secretary was deferred until more members can be present. The meeting ended at 7:30. The new officers are ready to roll at this week's meeting, 6:30 Thursday at Oscar's. Darcy James

10/12 Grangeville Farmers' Market Meeting notes

UNAPPROVED DRAFT

Present: Julie (Chair), Suzanne (Treasurer), Mark (Secretary), Judy (Vendor), Renee (Vendor), and Vie (Vendor)

Under Julie's leadership we discussed the positives and negatives of the past season, selected dates and times for next year, outlined pricing, identified some action items, and discussed suggestions.

Positives: The music was very popular. The timing of the music was good (towards the end of the morning). Vendors like the organization. We all liked the circular flow created by having some booths in the middle. The central booths also improved the visual appeal. The rooster was a big hit. Vendors were good about leaving the best parking for customers. We had some very happy vendors. The biggest positive of all was probably the warm reception from the community.

Negatives: Bathrooms are the big problem. We could also clean up the look of the info booth, it got very cluttered. Julie suggested a vertical board to hold community fliers and we liked that idea. The tax forms are still a little confusing for some. The appropriateness of some wares is in question.

2008 Season: The planning meetings will start on March 21st and run monthly (same time and place I assume). The market will reopen on June 7th 2008 and run Saturdays through Oct 4th, except for skipping (not on) Border Days weekend. After much debate it was concluded that market hours for 2008 will be 8-noon (4 hrs).

Vendor Rates (probably): The fixed rates are $128 for the season, or $36 for any 4 consecutive weeks, or $10 per Saturday. The percentage of sales option is 10% of sales. Vendors are encouraged to "buddy up" and share their booth spaces if they are not going to be there regularly.

Action Items & Suggestions:
City Council meeting in November to discuss availability of Heritage Square for the season (Julie, Suzanne, Mark?).
Follow up with Sterling Savings for use of their lot on any days we get bumped. (?)
Keep an eye on not burning out the organizers or regular vendors. (all)
At least 2 paid organizers should be present at each market.
Need to beef up the Jury process (Jury Committee)
Enhance "New Vendor Package" and update documentation in general (?)
The idea of demonstrations was well received. Cooking mostly, showing use of foods.
Eventually offering vendor samples at a common table.
Everybody liked the Van Noys selling off the truck.

Here is Liz's winning logo

Respectfully Submitted,

To my eye the Grangeville Community Garden is the prettiest bud in the Horizon bouquet. And many eyes will see the garden's beauty at the Visioning Rally next Monday.

Lorie Palmer at the newspaper recently wrote us that she didn't know about the Grangeville Community Garden. "The first I heard was by picking up a little flyer at the first Grangeville Farmers' Market." How do others like Lorie, people that have been busy over summer, people whose first exposure will be at the Horizons rally, how do they find their place at the community garden table?

I urge the committee to continue to help people find the table, to include them in open discussions. Please leave the gateway to the community garden open.

Hello All
It is with great pleasure to announce that we are happy to have the City Councils approval regarding a location for our Grangeville Garden. We are working with the Soroptimist group and appreciate them inviting us to share their park on the north side of town. Plans include planting more trees, the installation of restrooms, picnic areas and a soccer field. I will keep you posted on our future progress. Thanks to those whom attended our meetings and for all the encouragement. Thanks Mark Baker for your skills with this web site. We will need to design a new flier to include our good news (hint hint) . I would like to begin to have regular meetings, early Springtime. Great job on the Market. I loved doing my early Christmas shopping there. Maura Willig

The final market of the season has passed.

We have a logo. All of the potential logo pictures were spread out over a couple of picnic tables at the market and community members voted for their favorite. We got A LOT of votes. Liz Clark was the winner (both first and second place) of the $25 prize. Runners up were Joni Reardon, Dallas Kelton (From Mrs. Edwards Class), and Conner B. (also from Mrs. Edwards Class).

The two bountiful vendor donated gift baskets were won by Paul Rolvnink and Amanda Crousser.

The musicians for the final week were great. The first act was a return of Kathy Hedberg, Nancy Moser and Helen Smith. The second act was the wonderful Suzanne VanValkenberg who sang the sunshine out.

Please do not forget about the big post season meeting on the 12th. There is more info in this topic http://www.grangevillegarden.com/topic.php?id=23.

There will be a market meeting on 10/12 to talk about how our initial season went. Everyone in the community is invited to attend and share their observations and analysis of our inaugural Grangeville Farmers' Market season. This includes you. Vendors in particular are encouraged to attend.

Yesterday saw another wonderful community market. Even more vendors and people and lots of smiles. Grangeville Community Garden chairperson Maura was there for quite a while with a gaggle of happy kids around her.

One thing I learned is that you definitely want to get there early for the best pickings, like the dozen fresh eggs I found for $1.50. And the beautiful tomatoes and leeks and homemade paprika. And Kathy Hedburg and her band were super.

There is going to be a raffle next week for a basket of vendor goodies and it is the last day to submit entries for the logo contest. I'll be at the info booth if you want more information or to just stop by and say hi.

There was a nice turnout, the music from the Mattson's was great, and just about everyone seemed very happy to be part of a farmers' market growing in Grangeville. Except for maybe the rooster (sold).

Grangeville Garden Meeting Minutes August 16th, 2007

Attendees:
Mark Willig, Maura Willig, Darcy James, Joe Tosten, Terry Tackett, Andrea Davidson, Lynda Stamper, Yolanda Stout, Ellen Friel

Mark Willig called the meeting to order. Terry Tackett from the Soroptomist organization discussed a project to renovate the Soroptomist Park. This park is owned by the city and the city has authorized the renovation project to include a restroom facility, playground equipment, and landscaping. Discussion took place to possibly incorporate the garden project with this renovation. Committee discussed possible funding for the project utilizing various available grants. Terry and Mark Willig will attend the next city council meeting to seek authorization to incorporate the garden project with the park renovation project with a revised budget.

Committee discussed the question of insurance which will be further investigated.

Discussion took place to utilize local sources as much as possible with regard to this project. We discussed fencing, park benches, and picnic tables. Local manufacturer Tri Co was mentioned with regard to these amenities.

Terry, Mark and Joe will meet next Monday at 4:00 to look at the park and measure the space required for the garden. The committee also discussed mapping the project out and locating someone to draw some plans once it is authorized by both Soroptomist and City Council. Terry will meet with the Soroptomist for their approval.

Committee agreed for a tentative ground breaking June of 2008, if everything goes according to plan.

Mark Willig mentioned that our 1 page flyer, introductory sheet will need to be updated as the project progresses.

Funds through Horizons have to be earmarked by August 31, 2007 deadline. Maura discussed the possibility to utilize a portion of those funds for an advertising banner. Maura will get an estimate for a banner and contact Jody with regard to Horizons funding.

Yolanda and Darcy will present report to Horizons at their next meeting at Oscars on Friday, September 7th, 2007 at 8:00 am.

Respectfully submitted

The market meeting yesterday was a big success. I'd guess about 18 people, lots of energy and interest and a goal of having something up and running in about a month. Meeting minutes should be coming soon.

Deanna did an amazing job of getting things rolling. And hat tips to Marsha and Julie. It looks like there will be weekly lunch meetings at The Gallery on Fridays at noon. If you plan on attending the lunch meetings it'll help Sue and Chef Nancy if you can call ahead with any lunch orders. There is a menu on their website.

Mark Baker's Hidden Agenda for the July 19th Meeting

a.) Amy Grey
visiting from moscow to talk about backyardharvest.org 208 669 2259

b.) Identify and research potential garden locations:
I propose that we aim high. In my mind the ideal would be a location within easy walking distance of the center of town. It will help get things moving to have a logical plan of action. An initial map was created 7/16 (see back). Who wants to lead this piece of the pie?

c.) Finish the initial bylaws:
The current draft of the bylaws can be found on the front page of the website, begging for feedback. I think our chances of success would improve if Mission Statement was simpler and more measurable. Maybe something like: “Create a community garden space in town by May 2008.” And maybe say something like it is oriented towards; low income, community service, and education. (As opposed to white middle class dogooders, who are just trying to get it started) Who can lead this?

d.) Continue to cultivate people:
The Art in the Park booth was great. How can we better reach folks that will benefit the most from the community garden? Who exactly are these people we are trying to reach? Ideas on how we can do this better?, get more folks to the meetings?

e.) Resource Fair:
* Do we want to do it at all? On our own or share a booth with Horizons?
* The coloring sheets worked out really well at Art in the Park.
* Logistics: Awning, Ice Cream (should be really cheap to do), Signs.
* Literature (keep it simple; coloring sheets, seed packets/fliers, mailing list signup?)

f.) Grow ideas and discuss:
* Should we start a (postal) mailing list?
* I'd like to start moving towards a writen pitch that we can present to potential donors. Any grant writers in the group that can work on this?
* Field trip to Deanna's to pick cherries next week (some for the fair/ice cream?)?
* I would love to see us tighten up and refine our booth technique (make it easier to do fairs in the future).

g.) Formalities & The Books:
* Paypal button on site (I need the bank acct #)
* Minutes due the day before the 1st Friday of the month, for the Horizon's Steering Committee. This also happens to be the day of the Resource Fair.

h.) Next picnic 8/16, Agenda Items:
Updates on Garden Location, Bylaws, review financials, the Resource Fair, The Pitch (towards grants)

I heard someone on the radio (KALX out of Berkeley) announce an event where folks can "make ice cream and eat it". And I thought of this resource fair. It is probably going to be really hot, and if we do something successful it needs to be fun. So what about making ice cream at a garden booth? Fruit (gardeny) ice cream (fun) with kids and fun people (community).

Does anyone have an ice cream maker we could use at the fair? Or know of anyone we could borrow one from for a day? Is this a bad or stupid idea?

I also sent out the following e-mail to all growers that participate in the Tuesday night growers market, and others who would like to but can't due to space:
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Hello!
My name is Jena Daly and I belong to a group trying to get a farmers market here in the town of Grangeville. You can view our website at http://www.grangevillegarden.com/

We have recently formed and are trying to get tips and ideas from other successful farmers markets on how to proceed. Amy Newsome has shared some Tuesday Growers Market information with me.

It would be helpful if you could respond to some of my questions below, as well as offer any additional suggestions you have learned that help make farmers markets a success.

- Have you been to Grangeville before?
- Grangeville is located 70 miles south of Lewiston on Hwy. 95. Would you be willing to travel to Grangeville to sell your goods?
- Do you know anyone else who would be willing to sell their goods in Grangeville?
- What would be the best day/evening of the week for you to sell in Grangeville?
- What could be done or provided to make it easier for you to sell here?
- What do you like best about the markets you currently sell at?
- Could you please share some suggestions that might help us get off the ground with our vision?

Thank you for your time!

In rereading my post above I realize that I need to elaborate. There are apparently already folks in the Grangeville Horizon's program that are working on a market and it just seemed to make sense to let them do their thing. Of course the Garden group is still very enthusiastic and supportive of the market and many of the gardeners want to be involved in the market. Speaking for myself I am happy to continue to share the website and meetings with the market folks. So if you want to continue to discuss the market here please do. That's how I feel. What do you think?

Yet another item I'd like to add to the agenda:

* Add a feature to the website so folks can easily make small donations.

I'll need to work with the Treasurer, but it is pretty easy to add a PayPal donation button to a site. It is very secure and easy to do. It simply allows folks to move money from their PayPal account TO a specific bank account. I doubt it'll bring in much money, but I think it is a good idea to make it as easy as possible for people to contribute should the fancy strike them.

Another item I'd like to add to the agenda, if you all agree:

* Election of initial officers of the organization.

How is that for a huge can of worms? It seems to me that we'll need officers to get the bylaws written and approved, so it is a step we'll have to take soon. Of course my eye is very much on getting a structure in place and we'll need to have all of this to be in a position for serious funding and pitching our idea around town. The current draft of the Bylaws identifies 5 officers: Chairperson, Secretary, Garden Coordinator, Market Coordinator and Treasurer. This would just be an initial team to get rolling and we can have a proper vote in a few months or something like that fix any mistakes. But I think it would be a huge marketing aide and tool to have a team in place.

Is anyone interested in assuming an official position?

Hi Darcy, good to see you here. As I mentioned on the list, but I might as well share with everybody, I think it would be wonderful if Amy came to Border Days, and the parade, and the rodeo and to visit our booth at Art in the Park. I welcome sharing the space with backyardharvest.org if she wanted to piggyback on our setup, I think it is a very good fit. I remember back in 2002 we had about 80 lbs of extra tomatoes that we brought to the food bank and it was very rewarding, as opposed to having given them to the goats. I think it is a really good cause and anything we can do to help is ok with me. Plus I'd love to meet her.

Hey, did I actually get logged in? Amazing! I have an additional item for the agenda this week, or maybe a subtopic under Border Days booth: Can we decide whether we want to meet with Amy Grey, the Back Yard Harvest lady, in connection with our booth setup, or at the booth on the 4th, or sumpn? She is standing by with a flexible schedule for July 2-4; will meet with us then or at another time if we want to suggest one.
Have a good week, everybody! Darcy
